The past two decades have seen a revolution in the study of cancer biology. Advances in molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology have contributed to our understanding of malignant transformation, cancer prevention and cancer therapy. The Georgetown University Interdisciplinary Program in Tumor Biology provides doctoral and master’s students with an excellent academic environment and interdisciplinary training for a career in cancer biology research. Our students develop their potential to produce highest-quality research and academic scholarship.

Our program brings together about 60 faculty members from basic science and clinical departments, as well as the expertise and resources of Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center that combines excellence in basic and clinical cancer research, as well as research on cancer control and prevention.

A combination of formal courses, seminars, and ongoing collaborative research projects bring together faculty and trainees in a unified doctoral program committed to providing quality education in cancer biology, prevention, and therapy.

Tumor Biology faculty Michael D. Johnson and Aykut Üren will be among the recipients of GUMC’s Toulmin Pilot Projects funding for the coming year. The awards support innovative research projects that have significant potential to attract additional funding in this competitive research environment.

New Blood Test Holds Potential to Reduce Liver Transplant Failures

Liver transplant is a lifesaving surgery, but a significant number of patients experience organ rejection or other complications. Now, a new study by scientists from Georgetown University and MedStar Health describes how a single blood sample can be used to catch problems at the earliest stages, allowing tailored treatment to prevent the organ’s failure.
